This blog is the result of the videoconference course: 'Image and Video-Storytelling for the English Class' with Jamie Keddie. This course was organised by the Centro de Formación del Profesorado en Idiomas in Valladolid in November 2020, and over 240 teachers participated. We want to thank the generosity of these teachers whose work and didactic proposals can be seen on this blog. Photo by: @sharonmccutcheon on www.unsplash.com

THE SEVEN WISHES (ALBA GUTIÉRREZ)

Imagen
Image: The Seven Wishes by John Bauer I would use this image in English class with my fifth graders to practice listening and speaking. I think it is an interesting image that would make you reflect and imagine different possibilities. Before telling the story that this image contains, I would ask them what is that fantastic creature that appears in the image and why do they think it is there. I would also ask them what do they think that this child is feeling. If they think he feels astonishment, fear, curiosity, surprise ... This image would help me start a story related to fantastic creatures such as elves, fairies and introduce the children of this course to this vocabulary that I feel is attractive to them and very motivating. After reading the story, we would practice r eading comprehension . I would ask them questions to see if they have understood the content and if they have followed the sequences. I think this activity is suitable for children in higher grades of Prima...

SILLY SYMPHONY (ISABEL ALONSO)

Imagen
This activity is for the 2nd grade of Primary Education. The objective, belonging to the subject of Natural Science, is to know the different materials and their characteristics. We will use the technique learnt in the course “story seeding”, giving the students the next words: straw, sticks/wood, bricks/concrete. We can show them pictures or the real materials. We will talk about them saying the shape, colour, size,… If possible, we will let the students touch them, and we will introduce new words in order to describe them. The students will try to imagine a story involving these three materials. We will encourage the students to be creative, using the vocabulary learnt. After that, we will show them the video ("Silly Symphony, The three little pigs"). We will do some games with the flashcards of the materials, with word and picture cards, putting the pairs together, using the memory to hide and find them, putting the flashcards in different places of the classroom and mak...

PICTURE TELLING OBJECTIVE : To activate the students' knowledge of English in order to understand and make a description of a picture as well as to link it to its sociocultural context. o Language level: B2 o Learner type: Teens; Adults o Time: 50 minutes o Activity: Communication activity o Topic: Not so common situations o Language: Prepositions of place (Task One) o Materials: Picture STORY SEEDING (5 minutes) Teacher: I give them a short account of my weekend. It was last Sunday, November 22nd, when I came across this picture (I'm holding but students can't see). I loved it because it rings a bell on me about a story I know very well. Saint Cecilia's feast day is celebrated on November 22nd . She is the patroness of musicians and Church music. I know about Saint Cecilia because, in addition to teaching English, I am also a musician. It is said that, as she was dying, she sang to God. It is also written that as ...

HANDA'S SURPRISE (SILVIA VALENCIAGA)

LEVEL: 1st Primary OBJECTIVE : To create simple stories, adapt stories to different scenarios, use key words from the lesson and compare with the original story. TECHNIQUE : Constructing stories from images. IMAGES : https://view.genial.ly/5fb41da8ac09ff0d9578c5c5/presentation-handas-surprise-creating-a-story ACTIVITY: this is a preactivity before working Handa’s Surprise Book. Students are learning about living things in Natural Science and English. The idea of the activity is to create a story using an animal and a plant that apear at random. There are two images that always appear in the story, Handa and basket. Every day different students create a story and we review words and english structures. Every three days we change the landscape of the story and they could change the story too. Once they have seen all animals and plants and use them through different stories, it is time for listening the original story of Handa. Then, we could compare the original story with th...

THE SOLDIER AND THE DONKEY (DANIEL MARTÍN)

Imagen
This photo shows a group of soldiers marching on a field. One soldier is carrying a baby donkey on his back. I first saw this photo on Facebook. There are two versions to the story . You will have to go to the link provided to find out : https://eu.usatoday.com/story/news/factcheck/2020/07/15/fact-check-photo-soldier-carrying-donkey-algerian-war/5443306002/ Let me share with you first that my students are requested to bring personal headphones with them because this allows me to set up different listening tasks and they can go online with their phones and listen to the material (mostly Youtube videos) at their own pace and with good quality sound, which is important for many students. So I used an online voice recorder (Vocaroo) and made two voice recordings. Recording A with a description of the photo and one interpretation of the story . Recording B with the same description of the photo and the other interpretation of the story . Students were divided into pairs and were ass...
