INTEGRITY (DIANA MOYA)
TECHNIQUE: JUST VIDEO - NO SOUND
LEVEL: B1-B2 (any age)
MAIN OBJECTIVE: Improve students' oral skills. Describe a sequence of actions in a variety of tenses.
ACTIVITIES: Teacher shows a stillframe of the marathon and elicits vocabulary from students (overtake, cross the finish line, triathlete...). Then, the first part of the video is played without sound (up to 0.20''). Students are asked to describe the sequence in groups of 3-5. Teacher helps around with tenses but doesn't comment on content at this point.
Then, the full sequence is played without sound and students are given time to adjust their description.
Finally, the video is played with sound. Students check Will Smith's wording to their own. Teacher clarifies that there might be many ways to describe the same sequence but does monitor/check grammar and content at this point.
The activities described above are the pivotal point around which the rest of the activities might revolve. Depending on time constraints and curriculum to be covered, the following activities might be added before or after:
B1: Sports vocabulary, students share their experiences around sports competitions (doing or watching sports), winning/losing and feelings attached to them. Individual v team sports. Fair play. Sports people famous for being 'good sport' or the opposite. Frustration in sport. (All these might be interesting if teaching at secondary school level).
B2: Most likely, less time would be spent on monitoring grammar and the activity might be completed with students commenting on sports and integrity. Any of the above, plus:
